When you hear the combination of anime and cat, it usually, comes to mind cat-girls in lewd situations, however, seldom do we see an anime where a cat is nothing more than a cat, that´s why this anime is a gem: The MasterfulCat is Depressed again, today.
The story is not riddled with enigmas magic or moral dilemmas. It´s the story of a salary woman named Saku who lives alone with her cat. Her cat, Yukichi, is a regular cat except that he can do all the house chores. They live together as Saku´s life with her big cat has an effect domino in her life.
Before meeting Yukichi, Saku was a woman who was the embodiment of a “hot mess”. Her house was a mess, in a literal sense. There was garbage on the floor and the fridge used to be empty. Saku was a girl who wouldn´t have survived long without help- the anime never mentions her family and considering the mindset Japanese people have “work, work, and work” maybe the young woman felt she had no right to ask for help but still, she´s a good person…
A good person who saw a poor and tiny black cat about to die in the coldest winter of her city and didn´t wait a second to save the poor cat.
And if you think I´m giving spoilers, this is not an anime with great revelations, let alone plot twists. Yuki is Japan´s Clifford- he grew at such size because he saw his owner needed help in the house- and that´s it.
It´s an anime without drama.
It is an anime for those who want to relax after a hard-working day and wish their pets would help with the chores.
I recommend and give 10 out of 10 stars here.
Hitsuki Yamada makes the story and art. It started as a serialization of Kodansha‘s Suiyōbi no Sirius online manga section on the Nico Nico Seiga website in August 2018 and has also published in Monthly Shōnen Sirius since October 2021—an anime television series adaptation produced by GoHands aired from July to September 2023.
I stumbled upon this anime by accident and I thought it would be one of those fetish animes, however, I found a real gem indeed. It´s a sweet story between a woman and a cat and their bond I think this could even be considered a Found Family of sorts.
It´s unclear if this anime will have more episodes.
