In my mind – Picture Book Review

Hey everyone, I’m Ayxan Solongo aka Arden Skye aka TimeFliesAway, a shapeshifter traveling through the multiverse.

In this Story, i got to tag along with Camilo on his first day of school. He’s quite nervous and not very happy about the situation; has trouble fitting in and listening to the teacher. But there are also fun things at school, as he discovers.

Having had a mind that was constantly daydreaming in school (and still is now), I was practically drawn to Camilo and his struggles. I’m professionally undiagnosed on this earth, but self-diagnosed ND and have lots of traits in common with autism, ADHD and AuDHD.

However, this chapter doesn’t delve much into ADHD and could ‘just’ be a restless/hyperactive child, nervous about its first day of school.

Especially because i was kicked out of the world relatively abruptly. Not much a fan of that.
On one hand, from a marketing perspective, I understand that this might help to grow a fan base who knows you’re gonna publish more, especially sequels of this one (I’m guessing at least). Makes totally sense.
On the other hand, from a visitor’s perspective, it feels too open-ended. Printed invitations aren’t very cheap, so if I pay 20 euros for a supposedly stand-alone ticket, I don’t want to be left hanging at the end, and almost be forced to buy a continuation ticket, once it‘s available, as I’d want to know more. This works for smaller collections like the Conni series, but for this type? Eh.

I mean, on another hand, a continuation technically isn’t necessary because it’s relatively self-explainable what happens next. Or maybe the author wants kids to imagine and theorize what will happen next in Camilo’s life. Perhaps use it as an opportunity to teach children how to self-reflect.

Still, since it’s in the blurb it’s specifically about ADHD and not “just a restless/hyperactive kid”, I would’ve expected a note in the story about that. Didn’t have to be directly said that Camilo has ADHD, but simply how his parents manage the disorder at home or what makes home better for him than school (apart from the obvious/common issues). As it is now, it’s just a “list of problems” story, not “list of problems and answers or list of ways to solve them”. In this case, “solve” means “how to deal with it so it’s less disabling”.

The art of the world is cute though (quite diverse characters too) and the narration style also is easy to follow.
