Muted is a coming-of-age graphic novel about witches based on a Webtoon of the same name. The story begins around the full moon after Camille Severin’s 21st birthday, where she is supposed to summon a demon to give her wealth and status. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) for Camille, the ritual doesn’t quite go to plan.
It needs to be said that I am definitely not the target demographic. While I love the premise, it felt like something I would have enjoyed more at 13-14. Personally, I found the plot to be predictable and cliché but it’s something my daughter would love, so I’m going to review this from the teenage angle.

The relationships are definitely what makes this graphic novel interesting. There are a great variety of relationship dynamics at play – family, romance, friendship, pets. It’s the perfect setting for an age group where friendships are starting to become more dominant and role models need to be chosen carefully. The story revolves around the idea of found family which will resonate strongly with those who feel like they don’t fit in.
The scenes are well drawn and visually appropriate for the subject matter and audience. The vibe is creepy without being graphic. When I first started reading, I expected the story to be darker but it’s genuinely uplifting in places. The artist manages to blend the cuter aspects into the overall gloom without sacrificing either side which is to be commended.
The representation in this graphic novel is also excellent! I am very happy with the disability, race and LGBTQ+ inclusion. There are scars, wheelchairs, grey hairs and more. It felt natural without being overbearing and I’m sure the redheads will be equally thrilled with how many Muntz has managed to cram in.
Overall, I don’t know if I would read the full series but I would absolutely recommend to my daughter, confident that she would adore it. I’m sure this time next year, I’ll be presented with a birthday list full of Muted merch and I’ll be overhearing conversations quoting, ‘It’s okay if you like “PLANTS”‘ followed by many giggles.
