Well this came out of absolutely nowhere, and occured in the most Nintendo way possible. Taking to X (formally Twitter) Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa tweeted out:

So there we go! Before the end of March 2025, we can expect the full reveal of the next Nintendo console! Will we have a Switch 2 or will Nintendo continue the trend of bringing in completely new hardware with a new way of gameplay occuring?
The Switch has been a great console for me in terms of both its portability and ability to just plug straight in to my TV to play to. I personally hope this successor keeps these features and also includes backwards compatibility.
