Where the wind comes from – Movie Review

Also known as: Wohin der Wind uns trägt / وين ياخذنا الريح

Couldn’t find one with english subtitles on Youtube.

Characters

While I may be from Germany and don’t have their same family situations (although similar; my mother is also disabled), I could relate to Alyssa a lot. Dreaming of a better world, using imagination to get through reality, being spontaneous, and trying to do the best in life, which however needs to also be lots of fun. She probably impersonated Gen Z quite well.

Mehdi has a poetic artstyle. I like the way he draws and sees the people around him, especially when he painted Alyssa and then described his intention about that work. And his storytelling.

I loved their sibling-like friendship too. And the queer representation in the middle that positively surprised me (didn’t know it was gonna have any queerness in it!).

Story

It tackles quite some political issues, mentions the Weltschmerz associated to listening to the news, showing where feminism is needed and even confident women like Alyssa aren’t safe, and calling out artists who only win competitions because of their fame/name rather than their skills. It’s not discussed much, the main genre is still comedy. They were unexpected but fit in well.

The ending surprised me, as it is not the typical comedy roadtrip movie ending. Reminding that one of the genres is also drama. It’s not bad. Just … very realistic and bittersweet. Although hopeful, too.

I wouldn’t mind a sequel.

Soundtrack

Introduced me to some amazing new songs! Added it to several playlists of mine on Soundcloud and been listening to it here and there:

Critique

The only thing I didn’t like was the excessive smoking. At some point too often depicted.
