Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is a turn-based strategy game by Ubisoft. This one is designed as a prequel to the original series and sets my nostalgia sensors tingling. For those of you who weren’t gaming in the 90s, this series defined an era and this particular game has taken the series back to its roots.

Part city-builder, part hex-tile battle simulator, your heroes roam the map gathering experience, materials and artifacts. The player can build up their armies to capture other cities and eliminate other player’s heroes.
This version has a new campaign, new maps and better graphics. Other than that, it’s exactly the same game. Fans will be thrilled, modern audiences may wonder what the hype is about. Since the game is very competitively priced for the amount of gameplay, currently £34.99 for Early Access on Steam, I expect it will have a lot of takers.

So far, I’ve lost more evenings than I care to admit to the new game. It’s as addictive as the originals and the campaign has some fun challenges in the form of limiting factors, such as capping heroes and buildings or less starting resources.
As usual, you get multiple choices on which maps to play, so there’s a decent amount of replayability just in the campaign. There are 4 different difficulty settings – Easy, Normal, Hard and Impossible. I’ve been playing the game in Normal mode and haven’t had any problems. For new players, there’s no shame in starting on Easy but you may want to start a single game to test the waters before diving into the campaign. For hardened adventurers, I’ve seen complaints that the Impossible mode is not enough of a challenge. For my next campaign, I’m definitely going to give Impossible a try.

Overall, Ubisoft have created a fantastic product and really listened to fans after the disaster of Heroes V. I hope we get more of these in the future because I doubt I will ever tire of them.
