Rainbows made me cry (no surprise there).
Wow! The animation is ghibli-like, especially the nature sequences. Albeit in CGI with a 2d filter, it still has similar vibes to Ghibli movies. Probably intentional.

The story moved me to tears, particularly the part where Iris wants to go with Arco and Clifford helps her along. And then the ending, too.
Especially the ending with Arco’s parents! It’s not really tragic but incredibly bittersweet <3
Time-travel is often associated with plot-holes, but this one makes a lot of sense actually. In my theory at least, the future only happens as it happens because Arco travelled to the past.
I like the message the young children get from their sidekicks/helpers:
“If you love someone, you’ll do everything to make them happy.”
(I wasn’t a fan of the crush thing when they’re 10-11 years old, but this was a great addition in regards to saying that message! Probably what a lot of young boys need to know.)
And the general message from the movie overall:
“Don’t take anything/people/time for granted”
9/10, would watch it again in theaters.
9 because everything in the future is still very binary and heteronormative.
And there’s still a lot of things left in the open. For example, how the whole time-travel aspect works, why one needs to be 12 to fly, etc. Generally the future wasn’t very informative. I hope there’ll be a sequel?

Would’ve wanted to watch the original with subtitles but unfortunately my theatre only showed German synchronization. Not that German synchro is bad – I used to like it a lot – but in a.gen. times, we just never can’t be sure whether studios are hiring human voice actors. And I do not want to pay for generated voices. (Plus I always prefer to watch the original languages.)
