Spirit City is not so much a game as a productivity boost. You get an avatar, a few playlists to choose from and cute spirit companions that appear depending on what activity your avatar does at different times of day. In concept, it’s a fantastic idea but I wanted to test it practically. Truthfully, I’ve put in 227 hours so far and haven’t gotten much use from the in-built productivity tools. My usage has mostly been as a lo-fi Spotify while I played other games to review.
The art is great. I love decorating my space and dressing my avatar. I adore the cute spirits and enjoy finding new ones. Unlocking the skins and new items does give all the happy brain chemicals. In that way, it’s not a bad idle cosy game. If, like me, you spend a lot of time working at the computer then you can potentially get plenty of in game currency.

The habit tracker seems to serve no purpose. It is 100% manual and I prefer a physical notebook. Surely there are in-game rewards for sticking to your habits? Nope. It doesn’t reset weekly or monthly, the user is expected to tick/untick all the boxes. Likewise, the to-do list has barely any functionality. Manually add the tasks, check off the tasks when done and then… delete them again. My expectation was to plan my daily/weekly tasks and that they’d reset automatically. Y’know, like every other productivity app out there.

It’s like someone was told productivity games are a great money maker, so they decided to make one without any research into how people are already using these tools. As a productivity game, I can’t recommend the game in its current state. As an idle game that plays background music, it’s cute. For the £7 current price tag on CDKeys, it’s certainly not bad. It could be so, so much better.
