Watched the trailer a few days ago and went to see it in theaters as soon as I could.
The documentary is structured into 3 chapters.
1st one shows Milo, a young woman acting as a man outside because that’s the only way she feels safe. She can’t sleep, even though she wants to. Her father burned all her papers, making sure she’s tied to home and can’t do anything. Little does he know, she sneaks out often and volunteers as a therapist.
2nd chapter is about Khalili, an outsider in his family, seen as weak by everyone. Once he gets a camera and starts filming, he realizes he’s not that weak after all. Documenting the youngster revolution in Iraq with his lenses, he feels empowered. Even when he gets attacked a few times, he keeps coming back to protests.
3rd chapter is a mix of both. Milo planning to get a passport and fleeing Iraq, and Khalili getting married.

Every time I read/say the title, I get an earworm of “immortals” by Fall Out Boy. Melody-wise, the song doesn’t fit that well, but the lyrics does, actually.
Milo is my new “idol”. I admire her and look up to her. If she can do it, with her situation in Iraq, so can I. With my situation not even being half as worse as hers.
Despite masking as a man, the brutality of the world, especially towards women, keeps getting to her. I found the therapy scene, where a young woman tells about how she’s being physically abused by her father (not just sexually, but also violently) very heartbreaking. Particularly because she kept trying to smile through all. Just wanted to give her a hug.
But the ending!! Bro. Don’t do me like that! </3
I wanna know how it ends!! Or at least what the next scene was!! Such a cliffhanger! Didn’t know they do these in documentaries as well. D:
Khalili was also quite relatable. The part about him being seen as weak by everyone but then feeling empowered as a cameraman. My sentiments exactly. I liked his ending in the 3rd chapter.
I also like Milo’s ending, even with the cliffhanger. Apart from the feminism, the friendship she had with Avin was also sorta relatable. The passion she had towards the only person she truly trusted. Felt. I hope it ended/continued well for them.
Unfortunately, there was one scene that brought my protest anxiety back. The one that keeps me from joining large protests. Even when it, what happened there in the documentary, isn’t very common to happen generally, still … just when I thought I overcame it. Crap. (It was also quite heartbreaking to see. :c Reminded me of that one scene from ‘Mockingjay part 2’. Never let your guard down towards the government …)
But kudos to everyone who is daring enough to join protests and march with everyone! And silence to each person who had to experience what I’m afraid of. I’ll continue to do my deed behind the scenes.
