Sony finally went ahead with their much-anticipated first State of Play event of the year tonight, with updates and announcements across 15 PS5 and PSVR2 titles – and we’ve got all the details right here!

PSVR Announcements

Metro Awakening VR

Based on the books by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro Awakening VR, a new first-person post-apocalyptic shooter from 4A Games, releases later in 2024 exclusively for PSVR2.

Legendary Tales

Legendary Tales is a VR multiplayer action game in a medieval fantasy setting. Currently in early access, the full game releases on 8th February 2024.

PS5 Announcements

Helldivers 2

The sequel to Helldivers arrives on 8th February 2024. This is a co-op third-person shooter, with the new trailer boasting the exciting and explosive combat settings as teams of up to four players blast alien threats with a wide array of artillery.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

Sonic Generations was a nostalgic title released in 2011 where Sonic meets a younger version of himself to revisit some of his greatest hits in gaming. The trailer for the upcoming remaster, releasing August 2024, teased the return of Shadow and will pull in some new levels based on his own spin-off games in the series.

Zoneless Zone Zero

Exclusive to PS5, this anime-styled roguelike title is developed by miHoYo (Genshin Impact fame), and is set to feature an urban fantasy setting with action-RPG mechanics in a post-apocalyptic future.

Foamstars

Square Enix’s answer to Splatoon, Foamstars, gets an official full release date of 6th February 2024 and will feature as one of the free PSPlus games for February, so subscribers will be able to pick this up on release if they want to try it out without committing – a potentially smart move after the recent backlash over the apparent use of AI to generate some of the art within the game, which many already viewed as derivative yet surprisingly fun.

Dave the Diver – Godzilla Expansion

Dave the Diver, a notoriously cute and casual sea-faring adventure game, gets a surprising crossover event with none other than Godzilla himself, dropping May 2024.

V Rising

Stunlock Studios’ V Rising gets a full release later in 2024, after being in Steam early access for the last two years. The game is an isometric action role playing survival game with a vampiric, dark fantasy setting.

Silent Hill: The Short Message

Komani announced a brand new free-to-play, first-person title in the famous horror series, and shadow-dropped immediately after the announcement – you can pick this up NOW on PS5.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

Konami also confirmed that the Silent Hill 2 Remake is in full swing but stopped short of confirming a release date beyond “2024”.

Judas

From the creator of Bioshock comes a new character-driven first-person shooter called Judas. Gameplay and visual style resembled 2021’s Deathloop – and though little was revealed, this is sure to be one to watch.

Dragon’s Dogma II

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma II got a new combat-heavy trailer. Already an early contender for Game of the Year, it releases on 22nd March 2024, featuring stunning action RPG combat and multiple character classes to choose from.

Until Dawn Remaster

2015’s Until Dawn is getting a remaster, releasing later in 2024 for PS5 and PC.

Stellar Blade

As the console debut for Korean developers, Shift Up, Stellar Blade is billed as a challenging fast-paced single player action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world, with combat resembling something between Bayonetta, NieR: Automata and Scarlet Nexus. The latest trailer was an extended preview showing off the setting, characters, sidequests, and combat – which appears to be incredibly flashy and satisfying. Though specific mechanics were not addressed in the presentation, we saw cinematic combos and finishers with melee and ranged laser weapons. And, most important, we saw a release date – April 26th 2024, exclusive to PlayStation 5!

Rise of the Ronin

Team Ninja, the studio behind games like Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Nioh, and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin are back with their latest action RPG. Set in 19th century Japan, Rise of the Ronin promises to be their next big open world action RPG, releasing exclusively on the PS5. The game apparently features dynamic choices that have an impact on the world and story as you play. The trailer focused on sword and flamethrower combat, as well as on-the-fly traversal mechanics, including gliding wings and grapple hooks. The game drops on 22nd March 2024.

Death Stranding 2 – On The Beach

The sequel to Hideo Kojima’s psychological thriller, Death Stranding, finally received a substantial update, with a 2025 release window and official title. The trailer boasted what was the highest visual fidelity yet seen in video games. Character models, motion capture and facial movement were miles above anything seen to date, even in the last Death Stranding game. The dialogue confirmed that the mechanics in this game will be similar to the first – Sam (Norman Reedus) will be tasked with expanding the network of humanity’s survivors and making deliveries while dodging villainous factions and supernatural entities. The trailer had more focus on outright action and spectacle, with a particularly eye-catching sequence involving returning main villain, Higgs (Troy Baker), seemingly taking out a small army of robots with an electric guitar-turned-lightning rod. It looks to improve on the original in every way.

A New IP from Hideo Kojima

Kojima also confirmed that he is working on a brand new IP with a return to his roots in an “action espionage” game. While no trailers were shown, he said he hoped this would be the culmination of his 40-year career in developing video games. The only details shared were that his aim for this new game is to “transcend the barriers between video games and movies” with this very interactive game. Way to set the bar high for yourself, Kojima-san…

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Square Enix’s most anticipated second instalment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy releases in just over on a month, on 29th February 2024. Many expected an announcement today about a demo, as the original Final Fantasy VII celebrates its 27th anniversary today as well. Square have been making a successful habit of releasing high-quality demos for most of their titles recently, so when no announcement came, there was shock. However, seconds before the stream ended, it was confirmed that there will be another State of Play just next week, 6th February, specifically showcasing an extended look at Rebirth with “surprises” to come. Clear your calendars, JRPG fans!
