Merfolk & Water Creatures in episodes

Share this:

MerMay is quite a popular art challenge in May, almost as trendy as Inktober. The premise is to draw (or make art of, which is not limited to drawing) merfolk or water creatures during the whole month.
You could create original characters or fan-art… But what media feature (fantasy) water creatures?

Here’s part 3 of my “merfolk & water creatures in media” series: franchise episodes/chapters. = A small amount of episodes/chapters in an otherwise “dry” (non-water-related) plot/franchise, where the main cast gets turned into water creatures or they visit a merfolk (or both).

Part 1 was literature (books & comics), and Part 2 movies and tv shows.

Ps. This list only includes:

  1. Have seen myself (= I’ve seen the entire show/franchise.)
  2. Am familiar with (= I’ve seen a few episodes or know about it because of popularity.)
  3. Haven’t seen (= I’ve not seen anything from these franchises. All info is from my own research.)

There are many, many more than that.
(The links are anchor links and will lead you directly to the paragraph.)

Count:

  • TV shows: 59
  • Books: 7
  • Movies: 5
  • Games: 3
  • Music: 1

Have seen:

Chloe’s Closet

  • s1 ep12 “Purple like me”
  • s2 ep16 “Catch of the day”
  • s2 ep21 “Singing at sea”

A short kids show about Chloe, who has a magical closet, with which she can travel to fantasy worlds, together with her friends. Each episode, they all learn something that helps them irl.
In the 3 listed episodes, Chloe and her friends are turned into mermaids and explore the underwater world. One of the episodes also shows older mermaids.

(I’ve drawn my own character, Arely, into the show once.)

Elena of Avalor

  • s2 ep15 “Song of the Sirenas”
  • s2 ep16 “The tides of change”
  • s2 ep20 “Two left fins”
  • s3 ep28 “Coronation day”
  • picture books

A spin-off series of Sofia the first, from Disney. It’s about Elena, a princess who was locked inside an amulet for 41 years, which has given her magical powers. The show focuses on Elena learning to be a Queen (as she’s yet too young to rule), controlling her magic, and going on many adventures with her friends, while also trying to stop villains from doing evil things.
Watching the episode/movie “Elena and the Secret of Avalor” from Sofia the first will help a lot (as it’s a prologue of EoA). (I’ve not seen Sofia, so I believe you can watch the movie without watching the entire Sofia show first.)

In “Song of the Sirenas”, Elena and her family travel to a neighbor kingdom (Elena’s cousin rules there), where there also lives a merfolk (the sirenas). However, both kingdoms (land and water) are in a long truce. Elena tries to help them make amends.
(Each episode also has a picture book of the same name.)

Princess Lilifee

  • 1×23 “The little mermaid”

A picture book series by Monika Finsterbusch, which has been adapted into audiobooks, a movie, a musical and a 26-episode animated series. It’s about a floral fairy princess and her adventures with her friends.

My little Pony

  • The Movie (2017)
  • s8 ep6 “Surf and/or Turf”
  • s8 ep9 “Non-complete clause”
  • s9 ep25 “The ending of an end part 2”
  • Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks

I’ve only fully watched 5 seasons (and the movie, which, I didn’t know when I’ve watched it, plays in season 8), actually, but I do know the ending and the plot of the other episodes. (I do plan to watch everything, just haven’t really found the time…)

“The movie” introduces seaponies/mermares for the first time in the franchise (or at least in G4, I’m not familiar with G1-3), where the mane 6 not only meet a merfolk but also get turned into seaponies.
In “Rainbow Rocks”, there are sirens.

I’ve drawn my OC into a Seapony (Anna too), Mermare and Orca.

Jim Button

  • s2 ep2 “Gurumush’s Magnet”
  • s2 ep3 “The Perpetumobile”
  • s2 ep5 “Molly Has Disappeared”
  • s2 ep9 “The Blue Sea Shells”
  • s2 ep26 “Jambala”
  • book: “Jim Button and the mermaid”
  • live action movie: “Jim Button and the Wild 13”
  • Augsburger Puppenkiste (Augsburg puppet theatre)

Jim Button is a two-season tv show from 1998-2000, based on a german book by Michael Ende. There were also short books made based on the tv show, and a live action adaptation. The Augsburger Puppenkiste (Augsburg puppet theatre) also had a few shows, where Sursulapitschi, the mermaid, and her sea friends made an appearance.
The franchise is about Jim, who was shipped to an island as a baby. As there was no address, the citizen decided to adopt him. One night (about 10 years later), Lukas, Jim’s friend, leaves the island with his locomotive, Emma. Jim sneaks out and follows him. Together they go on many adventures.

One of my favorite childhood shows!! I’ve read the book many times as well, but the tv show is just better, in my opinion. And the intro song is such an earworm! (But, do yourself a favor and listen to the intro song in german, instead of English and every other language. No idea what that the other countries were thinking when they translated it.)
(The german version (both seasons) is available to watch on Youtube for free. Some english episodes probably too, if you search for “Jim Button”.)

The new adventures of Peter Pan

  • s1 ep7 “Girl power”
  • s1 ep14 “Peter’s choice”
  • s1 ep19 “Alone”
  • s2 ep5 “Copy cat”
  • s2 ep21 “The water fairy”

A CGI adaptation of the famous Peter Pan, set in the modern world. Each episode, Peter takes Wendy and her brothers to Neverland, and together with the lost kids, they have lots of fun, exploring the island and fighting Captain Hook.

There are 3 mermaids, whose tails are based on tropical fish. I really love their designs.

Tangled the series

  • s2 ep9 “There’s something about Hookfoot”
  • s2 ep11 “Happiness is…”

A tv show that plays after the Tangled movie from 2010 and after the special movie “Tangled Before Ever After”, which serves as a base for the series.

In 2×09, Rapunzel and her friends are stranded on an island, where they meet a mermaid. She also makes a short appearance in 2×11 and 3×26.

Simsala Grimm

  • s3 ep20 “The little mermaid”

An animated series, where each episode features a different fairytale by the Grimm Brothers. Originally 2 seasons long, but as it got really popular, they extended it for a 3rd season, which also features fairytales from other authors, such as Hans Christian Andersen – and episode 20 is his most famous story.

One of my childhood shows! I didn’t really grow up with Disney, so these adaptations (apart from the original books) were my “fairytale knowledge” until my teenage years.

Kashi no Ki Mokku (Saban’s Adventures of Pinocchio)

  • s1 ep24 “Mermaids and pirates”

As said, I didn’t grow up with Disney (actually, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Disney’s Pinocchio to this day), instead, the Pinocchio’s I watched as a kid was this anime and another anime (where Pinocchio has brown hair). Apparently, this anime is the most brutal one… (for a kids show)

The little prince (tv series)

  • s1 ep3 / Book 17 “The Planet of Bubble Gob” (J 603)

A CGI adaptation of the famous book, but with a bit of a different storyline: The Prince & his fox explore the galaxy and try to stop the snake from killing planets. Each episode (which also has their own book & audiobook) is about a different planet and starts with the Rose getting and reading the letter from the Prince.
The Prince also has a magic sketchbook and a magic outfit that appears when he activates it. Thinking about it now, it reminds of Magical Girls plots.

While I did grow up with the book, I fell in love immediately when I saw this tv show for the first time! Each planet is so creative, and as an artist, I just love his magic sketchbook! (And the german intro song is so peaceful~)

Boyfriends.

  • s1 ep84-86

An ongoing Webtoon by refrainbow about the daily lives of 4 college guys in a poly relationship. The chapters are episodic, while still following an overall storyline.
Chapters 84-86 (or Volume 2 in print) feature the characters in a The Little Mermaid AU.

Fast & Furious: Spy Racers

  • season 5: South Pacific

A CGI spin-off of the movies, Spy Racers is about Dominic’s cousin, Tony, and his friends, who equally like car racing. Each season plays in a different country/environment – s5 has multiple episodes underwater.

(They don’t meet or get turned into fantasy creatures, but I felt like including it. Who knows, maybe it inspires you to design underwater cars or merpeople based on these cars…?)

Am familiar with:

Barbie Dreamtopia

  • s1 ep8 “The lost treasure of the prism princess”
  • s1 ep11 “A winning color combination”

While most Barbie shows/movies have Barbie as its main character, Dreamtopia focuses on Barbie’s sister Chelsea, who goes to her dream world when needing to solve a problem or just to have fun. There are lost of different creatures, based on Chelsea’s imagination, and some include mermaids.
In both of these episodes Chelsea not only meets mermaids, but also gets turned into one.

I have seen a few episodes (actually 2 “movies” that each were compilations of episodes, which I didn’t know when I’ve watched it), just not these two. The animation style is quite different from regular Barbie, but I like it. It’s cute and imaginative.

Voltron

  • s2 ep2 “The Depths”

I have only seen a few clips from the show, but a friend is a hardcore fan of Voltron, so I pretty much know almost the whole story. I do plan on watching it, definitely.

In this particular episode, the main characters visit a merfolk on a frozen planet, after crash-landing there.

Subway Surfers

  • Subway Surfers World Tour: Underwater
  • Subway Surfers World Tour: Underwater 2024

An endless runner mobile game, released in 2012. I have played it a lot in ~2015 but stopped a few years later. The underwater map was first released in 2023, which I only found out by researching merfolks.

Ducktales (2017)

  • s3 ep4 “The lost harp of Mervana!”

I have read a few comics when I was a kid, but otherwise haven’t really seen anything. I do know the plot more or less, though, and I do plan on watching Ducktales sometime.

Troll tales

  • s1 ep10 “The mermaid”

A danish-german series based on a danish book by Henning Kruge. Quite literally, the tales of troll friends. In that episode, one of the trolls gets kissed by a mermaid, which puts him under a spell.

Collage by Austria-Man on Deviantart

Playmobil

  • short film “Finya & Florin and the Mermaids”
  • 9324 “Mermaid Carry Case”
  • 70368 “Coral Lounge of Mermaids”
  • 70886 “Mermaid’s Paradise”
  • 71447 “Mermaid Birthday”
  • 71379 “Magic starter pack”

It might not be as popular as Lego, but I’m sure everyone here knows about Playmobil as well.

The fairly odd parents

  • s5 ep28 “Something’s fishy!”
  • s10 ep29 “Dadlantis”

I had a love-hate relationship with this tv show when I was younger. On one hand, I really liked the idea of the fairy godparents and all the wishes. On the other hand, Timmy was too much of an annoying character. :’)

Dora

  • s1 ep13 “Magical mermaid adventure”
  • s5 ep13 “Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom”
  • s7 ep2 “Dora’s rescue in mermaid kingdom”

Who doesn’t know Dora, the explorer? If not seen the series, then you’ll for sure have heard about the memes.

Sofia the first

  • s1 ep22 “The floating palace”
  • s3 ep1 “Cool Hand fluke”
  • s4 ep26 “Return to Merroway Cove”

Sofia’s mom marries a king, which makes Sofia a princess. Her new siblings aren’t very happy about a commoner living with them, but Sofia tries her best to get along with them. Through a magical amulet, she can talk with animals. On her journey, she meets and learns lessons from other Disney princesses/characters.

As said earlier, I haven’t seen the show, but I’ve listened to some songs, watched that one movie, and seen a few clips. I love the idea with the crossovers.

Little Bear

  • s1 ep3 “Little bear’s bath”
  • s1 ep8 “Little bear’s mermaid”
  • s2 ep14 “Granny’s old flying rug”
  • s3 ep4 “Message in a bottle”
  • s5 ep2 “Fisherman bear’s big catch”
  • s5 ep12 “The one that got away”

One of my childhood shows, albeit I didn’t remember that there were humans as well. Thought it was just him and his animal friends playing around and going on adventures, but apparently not.

Futurama

  • s2 ep12 “The Deep South”

A childhood show, that I didn’t really like much, probably because it’s for adults. I did like the futuristic aspects and the aliens. But the humor was a bit too american for me, and the amount of romance & sex… nothing I was interested in back then, and still not really am. XD (Just like Simpsons, which, btw, is from the same creator.)

Gravity falls

  • s1 ep15 “The deep end”
  • s2 ep17 “Society of the blind eye”

The twins Dipper and Mabel Pines spend the summer with their Grunkle Stan in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls, Oregon, and have many unexpected adventures.
In 2×15, Mabel finds a merman trapped in the public pool and does everything she can to reunite him with his family in the ocean, even though that means ending their short romance.

I’ve only seen a few episodes of season 1. That the fandom was wild when it comes to shipping the characters, that I knew, but that there’s an actual canon romance (kiss)…? Idk, the characters are 12. And then they say people should stop sexualizing kids, when it comes to queerness… right.

Adventures of Sonic the hedgehog

  • s1 ep56 “The little merhog”

Well, who doesn’t know Sonic?
I’ve played a few of the franchise’s games, though never watched any episodes. (Didn’t even know there was a tv series until last year.)

Ben 10

  • s1 ep3 “The krakken”
  • s2 ep11 “They lurk below”
  • s2 ep13 “Back with vengeance”
  • short 5 “Sleepaway camper”
  • Omniverse s2 ep2 “Gone fishin’”
  • Omniverse s7 ep4 “The ballad of Mr. Baumann”
  • Omniverse s8 ep10 “A new dawn”
  • Ultimate Alien s2 ep5 “Perplexahedron”
  • comic issue 17 “Swimming with sharks”
  • comic issue 20 “Aqua nut”
  • comic issue 26 “Alien data files: ripjaws”

A teenage boy, Ben, can transform into multiple (10) aliens with a watch, and fights other aliens.

I’ve seen some episodes, whenever they were on TV, but never really followed it actively. I do like the idea and the aliens, though.

Aladdin (Disney)

  • 2×25 “Elemental, my dear Jasmine”
  • 2×59 “Shark treatment”

Did you know Aladdin has a tv series? Well, I didn’t, until last year. I’ve seen the movies, but not the tv show.

Babar

  • s6 ep10 “The seabed land”

Babar is about a royal elephant family going on many adventures, based on a children’s book series.

I mostly remember watching the CG reboot (Babar and the adventures of Badou), but have also seen a few episodes of the cartoon.

Strawberry Shortcake (2003)

  • s1 ep7 “Seaberry beach party”

Strawberry Shortcake premiered in the 1980s and has many series, movies, toys and whatnot. I’m not sure what I’ve seen or not seen, but always a few episodes here and there, whenever they were on TV. The character’s motto is “bake the world a better place”.
The series from 2003 has an underwater episode, where the titular character and her friends get turned into mermaids and meet a merfolk.

Polly pocket

  • s4 ep25 & 26 “Mermaid kingdom 1 & 2”

I’m not sure whether I’ve seen the tv show, but I do remember once getting one of the toy pockets/boxes gifted.

Identity V

  • s7 e1 “Peter Pan”
  • s12 e2 “Athletic games”
  • s16 e3 “A sacrifice to a siren”
  • s19 e3 “The song of the stormy petrel”

A Chinese 1v4 survival horror game with a gothic art style, where the player can take the role of a hunter or a survivor.

I have not played the game myself, but I read the lore and I’m in love with the art! Especially all the outfits!! If I had the time, I’d love to draw them all.

Just look at this! Magnificent art! No doubt the artists sold their souls.

Cookie Run

  • special ep “A mermaid’s tale” (Cookie Run Kingdom)
  • update “Soda island outlaws” (Cookie Run Kingdom)
  • update “Tropical Soda Islands” (Cookie Run Kingdom)
  • event story “Tower of the frozen waves” (Cookie Run)

A side-scrolling arcade game, where your group of cookies battle against evil beings. Inspired by the folk tale The Gingerbread Man, the series is set in a world of conscious gingerbread cookies that were brought to life in an oven by a witch and have since escaped her evil clutches.

Again, didn’t play it, but read the lore and mostly follow it for the art. Love the cookie’s designs!!

Miraculous ladybug

  • s2 ep14 “Syren”
  • s2 ep25 “Mayura”

A magical girls tv show from France.

I’ve dropped it in the middle of season 3, because Marinette’s behavior became too toxic and too annoying. No development whatsoever, yet for some reason everyone loves her. I do like the general idea and the kwamis, but Marinette is the worst character ever and the only way to make me continue it is by deleting her from existence. 🙂 (Unfortunately.)

Haven’t seen:

Winx Club

  • s1 ep11 “The monster and the willow”
  • s1 ep25 “The ultimate challenge”
  • s1 ep26 “The witches’ downfall”
  • s5 ep2 “The Rise of Tritannus”
  • comic issue 107
  • comic issue 142 “The pearl of the seas”
  • World of Winx s2 ep4 “Mermaids on earth”
  • movie “Mystery of the abyss”

I mean, I am familiar with the franchise due to popularity, but I’ve never really had an interest of watching anything and can’t tell you what exactly it is about, except teenage fairies with magical powers, who fight evil beings (typical magical girls plot), and have lots of romance drama. There’s also a live action adaptation and a CG reboot in the making.

Based on my research, the first 3 episodes on the list feature Undines – small, magical water nymphs or algae fairies –, and 5×02 as well as the movie feature Selkies – wingless mini mermaids with hats. One comic is about dark sirens, the other about kraken witches.
Mer-monsters, mutants, giant turtle, sirenix and singing whales make an appearance in seasons 3 & 5, though I couldn’t find the specific episodes.

Pop pixie

  • s1 ep2 “A pixie fish”
  • s1 ep48 “Mermaids, PopPixies’ Best Friends!”
  • s1 ep50 “The mermaid’s potion”

A spin-off series of Winx Club featuring the Pixies as main characters.

Royal Enchantimals

  • Ocean Kingdom
“Bree, Danessa, & Felicity’s Ultimate Mermaid Makeover!”
“New Friends & The Perfect Gift for Martina’s Big Sister!”
“Felicity’s Wrong Magic Pearl Throws Off the Kingdom!”
“A Disaster on Caring Coral Day!?”

A 4-episode webseries of the Enchantimals franchise, each about 10 minutes long and available on Youtube.

High Guardian Spice

  • s1 ep11 “The scypith”

A Crunchyroll original, but more of a cartoon than an anime. About four girls and their daily lives in the High Guardian Academy.

I’ve heard mostly negative things about it – apparently the dialogues are awful and generally the writing seems to be low-budget. Still, I’ve been meaning to watch it. The animation looks cute and the designs are neat.

Sabrina the animated series

  • s1 ep62 “Wiccan of the sea”

Sabrina, the witch, which also has a live action series and a crossover with Riverdale.

Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders

  • s2 ep8 “Jewel of the sea”

A 1995-1996 fantasy animated series with a book series, called Avalon: Web of Magic and its adaptation projects, as well as an upcoming official Jewel Riders comics series.
The titular heroine, Princess Gwenevere (named Starla in the Starla version) and her fellow teenage Jewel Riders, Fallon and Tamara, are sent by their wizard mentor Merlin on a great quest in which they will have to save their enchanted kingdom of Avalon and bring the now-exiled Merlin back home. (Source: Jewel Riders wiki)

  • music video: “mermaids”

I have seen the music video, but I don’t know any other songs from this musician.

We Bare Bears

  • s4 ep6 “Lil squid”
  • We baby bears s1 ep4 “The little mer-bear”

Based on The Three Bare Bears webcomic, it follows three bear siblings: Grizzly, Panda, and Ice Bear, and their awkward attempts at integrating into human society. It takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area. The spin-off, We Baby Bears, focuses on the three baby bears, and has more of an anime style. (Source: We Bare Bears Wiki)

Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz

  • s1 ep13 “The Emerald of Zog”

An American preschool animated series by Warner Brothers studios, inspired by the Oz books with elements from the 1939 film.

While I am familiar with the basic plot of Dorothy’s journey in Oz, more or less, – she has magical slippers that take her from place to place, and she’s accompanied by a tin man, a lion and a scarecrow –, I’ve actually never seen anything from the franchise.
Well, except Once Upon a Time‘s adaptation of it, but Ouat is quite known for changing the story massively (in a good way), so not sure how close to the original it is.

Little Charmers

  • s1 ep42 “A charmazing mermaid tale”

A series starring three young Charmers – girls with magical abilities who live in the magical land of Charmville. Together they go on many adventures and encounter magical mishaps on a daily basis.

In this episode, the charmers turn into mermaids in order to deliver a special present for the mermaid princess. (Source: Little Charmers Wikia)

Harold and the Purple Crayon

  • s1 ep6 “I remember Goldie”

Harold goes on many adventures in his own world, which he creates with his purple crayon.
In this episode, Harold searches for his pet goldfish, Goldie, who has died, and in doing so, he befriends a mermaid who helps him understand the meaning of death. (Source: Harold and the Purple Crayon Wikia)

It’s a cute concept. Similar to Chloe’s Closet, but with drawing. Child-me would’ve surely liked to grow up with that.

Hailey’s on it!

  • s1 ep21a “Mer-made in Oceanside”

A tv series from Disney with each two episodes in one, about Hailey, who wants to change the world, but isn’t very adventuresome. In the first episode of the 21st bundle, Hailey remembers she once saw a mermaid when she was younger, and therefore goes on a search to find her.

Tara Duncan

  • s1 ep1 “The silent siren”
  • s1 ep11 “Mer-Made”
  • s1 ep24 “Boil, Bubble, Toil, And Trouble”

A 2010 french TV series about a 17-year old girl, who is also a Spellbinder, and defeats evil villains from the Otherworld with her fellow Spellbinders and friends Sparrow and Cal. Based off the novel series by Sophie Audouin-Mamikonian. (Source: Tara Duncan Wikia)

  • s1 ep38 “Save the worlds”
  • s2 ep5 “Sensitivity training”

Whether superhero, fish-prince, clown cop, giant monster or tiny action-figure, Penn uses his unconventional heroic skills to save the day – his own way. (Source: Penn Zero Part-Time Hero Wiki)

In this episode, the little mermaid is in love with the wrong prince, so Kris and Johnny have to intervene, otherwise the sea witch will rule over both land and sea.

The marvelous misadventures of Flapjack

  • s1 ep17 “Gone wishin’”

Flapjack is a young boy raised by a talking whale named Bubbie. The two led a peaceful life until the duo discovered and rescued a pirate by the name of Captain K’nuckles, who tells Flapjack of a place called Candied Island. Inspired by the adventurous pirate, the three get into creepy predicaments and “misadventures” in search of Candied Island, and the coveted title of “Adventurer.” (Source: The marvelous misadventures of Flapjack Wikia)

I like that each of the episode titles are puns.

In their travels, the Adrenalinis have visited many real countries and places in the world, and even many periods in history (and, in some cases, fiction). (Source: The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers Wiki)

Doraemon

  • movie: “Doraemon: Nobita’s great battle of the mermaid king” (2010)
  • 2005 anime ep200 “Nobita’s Mermaid Legend”

All I know about this franchise is the titular mascot – and that it has many, many anime episodes, manga volumes, and movies.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy

The kids end up having to deal with everyday problems as they go through elementary school as well as combating various grotesque monsters, to beautiful goddesses, to spectral exterminators from within and outside the Underworld.
